The plenary speaker for this year's JASFL Autumn Conference will be Paul Thibault. See more about Paul Thibault in the website of The Semiotic Reviw of Books. On top of Text, Discourse, and Context: a social semiotic perspective. (1986), Social Semiotics as Praxis: Text, social meaning-making and Nabokov's "Ada" (1991) , Re-reading Saussure: The dynamics of signs in social life. (1997), Paul Thibault is also the editor of Ferdinand de Saussure which will be published in March 2003 by Routledge, an imprint of Taylor & Francis Books Ltd. The book will be over 2500 pages.

Paul John Thibault was awarded his Ph.D. degree by the Department of Linguistics, University of Sydney, supervised by Professor M.A.K. Halliday and Professor Roger G. Fowler. He has worked in the Department of Linguistics, University of Newcastle, University of Toronto, Murdoch University (Western Australia), University of Bologna, University of Sydney, University of Verona, University of Padua, the University of Venice. He has a tenure position in University of Venice, and is currently working in Lingnan University, Hong Kong. His research interests include functional grammar, semantics, discourse analysis, pragmatics, semiotics / social semiotics, stylistics, narrative theory, educational linguistics, language development, ape language research, Ferdinand de Saussure and his relationship to modern linguistic theory, social theory, visual communication, multimodal/multimedia text/discourse analysis and information technology. He has published widely in various journals and books. He has given a lot of seminars and workshops in different universities in the world.
