Functional difference between N-Rheme and Rheme Proper: Evaluation of N-Rheme

The difference between the two theories, Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) and Functional Sentence Perspective (FSP) has been described by many linguists. One of the proponents of FSP approach is Firbas (1992), whose approach to Theme/Rheme can be interpreted as the combination of the Theme/Rheme and Given/New in SFL. According to SFL theory, although the typical order for information structure is Given followed by New, Given and New can appear anywhere in a clause depending on the contextual constraints of the situation. On the other hand, Theme is realized in the initial position in a clause with the remainder of the clause falling within the Rheme. In the FSP approach, Theme and Rheme are identified through the interaction of three factors メlinear modification,モ メcontext,モ and メsemantic structure,モ and the realization of Theme and Rheme is irrespective to word order.
In each of these linguistic traditions, there is a term for the element which carries unknown/newsworthy information: メN-Rhemeモ (Fries 1993) in SFL and メRheme Properモ (Firbas 1992) in FSP. By examining a number of advertisements, Fries has found that more than half of the last constituents of those clauses (N-Rheme) are related to the purposes of the texts or text segments. On the other hand, Firbas claims that an element which is irretrievable from the immediate context is communicatively dynamic, and such an element can メcontribute to the further development of the communication.モ This study focuses on clauses in which the elements of N-Rheme and Rheme Proper are different, and examines how those elements are functioning in a text. An important finding from this study is that most of the N-Rhemes as well as the Rheme Propers in those clauses carry important information, but that they are related to different purposes of the text.

Theme and New in Play-by-Play Talk on Radio

This paper aims to explore the relationship between Theme and New choices in a specific register of English and to examine the ways in which these choices contribute to the realisation of textual meaning. The data used in this study derive from two Australian sports commentaries by two different radio stations of the same Rugby League football match in Sydney on 14th July, 1996. Specifically the data consist of excerpts of 'play-by-play' talk extracted from two lengthy extracts of commentary talk. In this study play-by-play talk is considered to be a register at a more delicate level than commentary talk.

The play-by-play talk excerpts are analysed according to Theme and New within the framework of Systemic Functional linguistics. Theme and New are both ways of realising the flow of informational concerns in texts. Thematic choices are realised by consistuency in the clause while New is realised by prosody. Each realises a 'wave' of informational prominence. The function of both Theme and New is culminative in a text and is best appreciated when 'enough of the textual environmant is taken into account' (Hasan and Fries 1995: xxviii). The analyses in this study reveal that there is a complementary relationship between the kind of information carried in the peaks of the Thematic waves and in the peaks of the New waves.

Investigating the Staging of Selected Genres in Japanese: Applying Theory to Practice

It has been shown that the social purpose or function of a text impacts on the shape or organization of the text (Halliday and Hasan 1985; Martin 1992; Fries 1995; Matthiessen 1995). A set of texts with a similar social purpose have been found to pattern in similar ways and cluster into types or genres. Each genre displays internal organization around stages which together realize social purpose. This paper aims to investigate the possibility that the organization of a selected group of Japanese written texts are staged and organised into genres in a similar manner. The approach is a Systemic Functional one in which the operations of the system of THEME and the system of LOGICO-SEMANTIC RELATIONS in the lexicogrammar are tracked and described in five instances of three genres. These include one factual news commentary; two folktales (minwa) and two narratives (monogatari). The unit of analysis over which Themes operate is the T-unit. Using this unit, the study presents organisational evidence that T-units pattern to organise the stages of texts which in turn organise into genres.

Halliday(1994)及びMartin, Matthiessen and Painter(1997)の区分に従い、probability, usuality, obligation, inclination, abilityに分類。

An Approach to the Thematic Development through Parallel Texts Analysis

Text as a semantic/lexico-grammatical gestalt: how the interdependency of figures is realized linguistically

Various top-down and bottom-up functional/structural approaches to textual analysis have already been arranged by Ikegami(1975). From the standpoint of systemic theory Eggins(1994) proposes the following three approaches to text: (1)text realized by the schematic structure which is a realization of genres (text from the viewpoint of context), (2)text as a concatenation of clauses considered to be an unfolding of Themes (text from the viewpoint of lexicogrammar), and (3)text as a discourse-semantic unit, where the top-down and bottom-up approaches intersect.
Referring to these concepts I will examine several aspects of texture, especially recognizing that text is a semantic and lexico-grammatical gestalt--semantically sequences composed of figures by means of interdependency, which is linguistically realized as a succession of clause complexes. Specifically, I will first reconsider Halliday&Matthiessen(1999)'s factors of sequences (temporality, expansion, equality) referring to Sato(1998,1999) in which I have discussed similar questions, then I will establish the 'discourse-functional unit' reified as a series of clauses, and its criteria, by examining written samples.

Introducing Professor Michael Halliday for his Plenary Talk at JASFL 2001 Tohoku University

 Noboru Yamaguchi, Tohoku University
The 9th JASFL Conference at Tohoku University, 6-7 October 2001

Title: Managing Meaning: a Systemic Functional View of How Language Works

Good afternoon, JASFL and non-JASFL colleagues who are interested in this special occasion. First of all, I am very glad to tell you that this impossible occasion has been made possible by the strong helping hand given to the Japan Association of Systemic Functional Linguistics by Professor Michio Sugeno, now leading the Laboratory for Language-Based Intelligent Systems, Brain Science Institute, Riken. We are very grateful to Professor Sugeno as well as Riken for this wonderful occasion. And at Riken, on the 5th October prior to this occasion, Professor Halliday already talked on Meanings, Wordings and Contexts: Modelling the 'Language-Brain', which was very valuable to the Systemic-Functionally oriented project of 'everyday language computing' currently carried forward by Professor Sugeno's research team. The main purpose of Professor Halliday's lecturing trip to Japan this time is to see about and give an additional impetus to the development of this particular research project, and perhaps, to commemorate the long-awaited publication by Kurosio Publishers of the Japanese version (Foreword by MAKH) of one of his most important writings, An Introduction to Functional Grammar (2nd Edition), translation and adaptation of which were carried out by Professor Hisao Kakehi and myself, with the arduous editing support given by Miss Kyoko Takigami of Kurosio Publishers.

Now, I am very much honoured to introduce to you Emeritus Professor Michael Halliday at the University of Sydney. For fear that my introduction should be a waste of time, for I suppose most of you must already know about him as a world-renowned linguist and about the great academic achievements he has been building up so far, by pioneering an important linguistic tradition of Systemic Functional Theory, I will talk not so much about his biography and bibliography which could be obtained easily, but rather, I will talk briefly about one very significant aspect of his way of thinking about language which tends to refuse an easy access.

Ever since he started thinking about language, Professor Halliday's main interest has always been in 'meaning'. And, for Professor Halliday, meaning is not a closed stable product which is ready-made or given in your mind and is simply waiting for a linguist to describe it or to connect it with the other ready-made product of phonology; but rather, meaning is open dynamic process both as text and as system; in other words, meaning is process which has been being constantly created and re-created phylogenetically in the evolution of human beings, ontogenetically in the growth of an individual, and logogenetically in the development of text.

Hundreds or maybe thousands of generations of our ancestry down to ourselves have learned to mean interpersonally, ideationally and textually at one and the same time, to construe our experience and construct our own livable world, in which we, gradually by interacting with other meaning people, have developed all different kinds of ways of meaning for different purposes in different contexts of situation. In order to construe their experience, children, who are born newly into our socio-semiotically constructed world, have to learn how to mean appropriately in those different contexts of situation and culture in which they are inevitably involved day after day, again gradually by interacting with other meaning people. But for a group of people or for a growing child, new ways of meaning have been being constantly demanded by ever-increasing semantic pressures, namely, by our constant social-semiotic negotiation with not only our material environment but also our textual environment. Above all, such new ways of meaning as to construe processes as if they were things have become ever-increasingly more important for us to construct the kind of uncommonsense and scientific knowledge and reality that can help us to protect and prosper ourselves, or maybe privilege some of us. Now we have a whole range of semiotic things in the textual environments of phylogenesis and logogenesis, which do not exist in the material environment in a real sense. In other words, we have abundant semiotic things effected by what we could call 'thingization', as it were, or perhaps 'reification' of phylogenetic and logogenetic kind.

In our field of linguistics, such frequently used words as 'text' and 'language' as well as 'meaning' are good examples of phylogenetic thingization of the processes in the material environment. Because they are thingized instead of 'processized', we can handle them very easily in our semiotic space and construct new knowledge and reality. But once they are thingized, they tend to start concealing their true nature of process from our immediate view or consciousness. Ideally, if they had been construed as processes rather than as things, we could be 'texting' and we could be 'languaging', so to speak. And if they had been construed as such, 'text' and 'language' would no longer be any such things that we could obtain or acquire from out there or from our biological makeup. Rather, both of them would be the same constantly continued processes of meaning on innumerable social occasions, and they would look different only when they are seen from different angles or perspectives. Text would be the instantial process of meaning on each social occasion, whereas language would be the systemic process of meaning in accumulations of such social occasions, namely, in a significant set of social practices.

To the best of my understanding, Professor Halliday's enormously important theoretical and applicational contribution to linguistics and other related fields of study and practice has been his unceasing efforts to trace and reverse the semogenic or meaning-creating process in the three different time depths of human evolution, individual growth and textual development, by means of de-thingizing 'text' and 'language' which have already been thingized, and to re-construe them as instantial and systemic process of meaning. In other words, he has been endeavouring to put 'text' and 'language' back into the real contexts of situation and culture where they actually belong and function, and to see how text works and how language works, or rather by de-thingizing 'text' and 'language', how text texts and how language languages to serve and sometimes dis-serve our needs, and, eventually, to construct and re-construct and sometimes, of course, mis-construct the reality of our world, as clearly illustrated by the series of multimodal ways of meaning by mass media for ideologically construing the recent events in New York City, Washington D.C. and southern Pennsylvania.

Well, very luckily, from now on today, we have the privilege of hearing Professor Halliday's talk, to which I hope this introduction might have some relevance. The title of his talk is: Managing Meaning: a Systemic Functional View of How Language Works.
